Dr. Prodipto Ghosh is a multidisciplinary professional specializing at the interface of science, economics, philosophy, and public policy. Currently, he is Distinguished Fellow and Director at The Energy & Resources Institute (TERI), New Delhi. His concurrent positions include: Member of the Prime Minister’s Council on Climate Change; Member of the Scientific Advisory Council to the Cabinet; Member of the Eminent Persons Group on G-20 matters of the Ministry of Finance; Member of the Governing Council of the Indian Council on Social Science Research, and several others. He was a member of India’s Core Group for International Climate Change Negotiations from 2001 to 2009 and 2012 (Leader of the Official Team during 2003-2007), and the principal author of India’s National Climate Change Action Plan.
His recent past positions include: Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment & Forests, Govt. of India (9/2003 to 5/2007), Additional Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, Govt. of India (6/2003 to 9/2003), Economic Advisor and Additional Secretary to the Prime Minister (6/2001 to 6/2003), and Senior Environment Specialist, Asian Development Bank, Manila (9/1994 to 5/2001). Other concurrent positions held by him (during 2001-2005) include: Co-Executive Secretary of the Indo-US Economic Dialogue; and Member Secretary of the Prime-Minister’s Economic Advisory Council and Trade & Industry Advisory Council, Member of the Independent South Asia Commission on Poverty Alleviation (ISACPA), and (during 2008-2010) Member of the National Security Advisory Board (NSAB).
He has held Consultancy positions with the UNDP, FAO, and IAEA, World Bank, and holds Visiting Faculty Positions in several national and international institutions, including Carnegie-Mellon University; Smith College, Oxford; TERI University; He is the author/editor of several journal articles and books in the fields of environment and climate change.
He is the recipient of the BP Pal Centenary Memorial Award for Outstanding Contribution to Environment and Resource Conservation (2006), Alumni Achievement Award of the Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi, for Outstanding Contribution to National Development (2007), and Alumni Achievement Award of the Carnegie-Mellon University, Pittsburgh PA, for Contributions to International Environment Policy (2007). He is a Member of the American Economic Association, and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India/UK).
He has a Ph.D in Economics and Policy Analysis from the Carnegie-Mellon University, Pittsburgh PA, a B. Tech in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi, and was a member of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) from 7/1969 to 5/2007.
